So what's with Volkswagen Beetle that made me allow it to occupy such s p a c e? Well, every time I see one, I would either smile or frown. And then I will laugh.
It has been more than two years when it started being customary for me to be on watch for beetle cars on trips. It has been like a law that whoever sees the beetle first gets to tap or hit the head of the persons he is with, exclaiming the word 'Pendong!'.
The chance to make points is endless and the best part is the guiltless feeling despite hitting someone else's head. What is then Presidential immunity compared to Pendong immunity?
It was my boyfriend who 'sort of' submitted this bill to senate. And since then, it has been a hobby for both of us to look around for beetles. Later we realized, we have come to memorize places where we can see them. Araneta Avenue, Buendia, San Juan. Sta. Mesa, etc. And the game has changed a bit. It is now a matter of who-remembers-a-beetle-is-parked-there first.
I would smile if I get to see one first. I would frown for a second if I miss. But then whether I see or miss it, I would end up laughing. I would laugh at how we shock people around us. That from silence, we would break into tapping heads and shouting 'pendong!'. Or I would laugh at how we would chain each other's hands if we see a beetle at the same time. The beetle has been a source of fun for me, for us and I do hope it would be for a lot of people.
Life somehow gets more happy when simply lived.
